Why National Schools’ Regatta Indoors?

Introducing the new junior indoor rowing competition: the National Schools’ Rowing Indoors (NSRi)

National Schools’ Regatta (NSR) have always strived to improve the racing experience of junior rowers in the UK. Desmond Hill, the NSR Founder, first established the regatta to provide more opportunities for juniors to race and it is no coincidence that in launching National Schools’ Regatta Indoors, NSR is proudly continuing his legacy. For the first time at a UK regatta there will be the opportunity to race on and off the water as National Schools’ Regatta opens the premiere junior rowing event to include indoor rowing.

‘The purpose of running an Indoor Regatta at this year’s NSR is to provide some competition for children from non-rowing schools enabling them to be part of and enjoy, the NSR,’ said NSR Chairman, George Hammond.

Since its foundation in 1947, Nat Schools’ (as it is affectionately known) has grown from an event for only four schools into a three day rowing extravaganza  supported by over 350 schools and clubs. There is a unique family atmosphere that is welcoming and yet competitive. We welcome cheering and shouting for the crews and the club rivalry is second to none!

It is an exciting time to offer an additional racing opportunity for 13 to 18 year olds. Indoor rowing is a sport enjoyed by millions and the rowing machine, or ‘ergo’ at school or in the gym is opening up the sport of rowing to everyone whether or not they have access to water and boats. With British Rowing promoting ‘Go Rowing’ and London Youth Rowing (LYR) providing indoor rowing to over 8000 young people each year, it has been fantastic to see the increase in participation in such a unique sport.

We are inviting all schools and rowing clubs to get involved in NSRi. We are calling for young, competitive athletes to come and battle it out in team and individual events. There are even races planned for parents, supporters and rowing coaches! The aim is to keep the standard of racing high and the competition fun and adrenaline fuelled. There are medals to be won and of course since this is the first year of the competition, there is history to be made.

You will be sure of a friendly welcome at the NSR Indoor rowing competition. It is going to be an experience no one should miss.
